About this position

Are you passionate about advancing healthcare through artificial intelligence? The University of Birmingham's School of Computer Science invites applications for a PhD project focused on computational methods and AI models for medical image analysis, including generative AI, vision-language models, multimodal learning, and foundation models. This opportunity is part of the Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group, which conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, medical imaging, and digital health technologies.

The project aims to develop robust, adaptive, and explainable AI algorithms capable of providing accurate diagnoses, personalised treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes. You will explore state-of-the-art methods such as multimodal learning, generative models, foundation models, digital twins, vision-language models (VLMs), and large language models (LLMs). These techniques will be applied to diverse medical data types, including medical imaging, clinical text, and electronic health records.

As a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to specialise in developing reliable machine learning models using foundation models, generative techniques, and/or multimodal learning approaches. The research environment is highly collaborative, with partnerships involving University Hospital Birmingham, Johns Hopkins University, Queen Mary University of London, University of Oxford, and University College London. These collaborations provide access to diverse expertise, datasets, and international research opportunities.

The group works with a wide range of medical imaging modalities, including ultrasound, MRI, CT, microscopy, and OCT. The project is designed to ensure that research translates into real-world clinical benefit, enhancing clinical workflows and supporting diagnosis.

Applicants should be self-motivated and enthusiastic about research in AI for healthcare, with a commitment to high quality research. A good first degree in computer science, statistics, physics, engineering, or any related field is required. Experience with AI for healthcare projects using PyTorch and/or TensorFlow libraries is expected. Strong programming skills in Python, C++, C, or Java are preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong problem-solving abilities are necessary. Experience in presenting or preparing scientific manuscripts for journals or conferences is preferred.
