About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in coupling cold atoms to photonic integrated circuits, based in the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory within the division for Quantum Technology at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). This new laboratory offers a vibrant, international research environment, newly renovated lab space, and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities. The research group explores quantum physics to unlock new ways of processing information, with projects spanning quantum computing, sensing, transduction, thermodynamics, and foundational studies, all focused on harnessing the powerful behavior of light and matter at the quantum level.
The research project centers on building an experimental platform to trap thousands of cold Strontium atoms near nanophotonic waveguides. This platform will be used to explore protocols for quantum metrology, simulation, and computing. The work involves a broad range of techniques, including laser cooling and trapping, spectroscopy, ultra-high-vacuum technology, photonic design, and nanofabrication. You will join a research group with expertise in atomic physics, photonics, and nanofabrication, and collaborate across disciplines in academia, industry, and society.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or a 4-year Bachelor's degree for those educated outside Sweden) in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Experience in experimental atomic physics, optics, photonics, or nanofabrication is highly valued. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.
The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025). The appointment is for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which can extend the position up to five years. As a doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits, including access to advanced courses, a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, and support for settling in Sweden, such as Swedish language courses. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and actively works on related initiatives.
To apply, prepare your application in English and attach all required documents as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each). Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation statement, and transcripts. Use the application form linked at the bottom of the job page; applications sent by email will not be considered. The deadline for applications is March 8, 2026. For questions, contact Dr. Nils Johan Engelsen ([email protected]) or Dr. Linda Brånell ([email protected]).
This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading research group at Chalmers University of Technology and contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum technology, photonics, and atomic physics.
