About this position
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for one or two fully funded doctoral student positions in the field of photochemical reactivity under confinement. The successful candidates will join the Grommet Research Group, part of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and participate in an interdisciplinary project focused on controlling chemical reactivity within confined environments. The research will explore how photochemical reactions differ when performed in solution, within nanoscale boxes, and under optical confinement in microcavities, offering a unique opportunity to gain expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, photochemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and nanoscience.
The project is conducted in collaboration with the groups of Prof. Timur Shegai and Prof. Christoph Langhammer from the Department of Physics, providing a rich interdisciplinary environment and exposure to cutting-edge research at the interface of chemistry, materials science, and physics. The Grommet Research Group emphasizes scientific and personal development, offering training in research, communication, and soft skills to prepare students for diverse career paths in academia, industry, or beyond. The group values collaboration, societal impact, and work-life balance, and is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
Doctoral students at Chalmers are employed by the university and enjoy full employee benefits, including salary and social benefits. The position requires physical presence in Sweden throughout the study period, and non-EU applicants must secure a valid residence permit before the start date. Chalmers actively promotes gender equality and offers Swedish language courses to help international students integrate.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits), or for those educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong verbal and written English skills are required. Experience in organic synthesis, photochemistry, and/or host-guest chemistry is considered meritorious. The doctoral program includes coursework (equivalent to 60 higher education credits), research, and teaching or other duties corresponding to 20% of working hours.
To apply, submit your application in English with all required documents (CV, personal letter, thesis, and transcripts) as PDF files via the provided application link. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is March 8, 2026. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Angela Grommet at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity to join a world-leading research environment and contribute to advances in photochemical reactivity and materials science. Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
