About this position

This doctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to sustainable metallurgy through the REFLAOD project, funded by Sweden Vinnova. The research aims to eliminate fluorspar use in the Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) process for stainless steel production, thereby improving material resilience, extending refractory lifetimes, and increasing recycling rates of steelmaking slags. The successful candidate will work closely with industry experts to develop a fluorspar-free AOD process, balancing steel quality, refractory wear, and raw material costs.

The project involves the use of advanced thermodynamic tools such as Thermo-Calc for process design and high-temperature experimental work to validate theoretical calculations. This research is highly impactful, offering a holistic learning experience that prepares students for both academic and industrial careers. The candidate will gain expertise in slag engineering, process kinetics, and materials science, and will be part of a dynamic research environment at KTH.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Mikael Ersson, an expert in the field. The position is full-time and comes with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, along with attractive employee benefits. The employment is for up to four years, with the possibility of renewal as per university regulations.

Applicants must hold a master's degree in metallurgical science, mechanical engineering, or a related field, or have equivalent qualifications. In-depth knowledge of steel metallurgy, especially stainless steel production and slag engineering, is essential. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Selection criteria include personal skills such as goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration, professionalism, and analytical ability. Experience with thermodynamic modeling and process kinetics is highly valued.

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, application letter, certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language proficiency, and representative publications or technical reports. All documents should be translated into English or Swedish if necessary. Applications must be submitted via KTH's recruitment system by March 26, 2026.
