The University of Auckland is offering three fully funded PhD positions focused on revolutionizing Greenshell™ mussel aquaculture production in New Zealand. This collaborative research program aims to address key bottlenecks in the industry, particularly the inefficient use of small seed mussels (spat). Two of the PhD projects will develop and optimize husbandry practices for commercial mussel nursery systems, working closely with industry partners. The third project will focus on scalable, commercial approaches for separating small mussel spat from spat collectors, providing high-quality seed for nursery culture.

Successful candidates will join the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand’s leading research institution in this field. The research is highly applied, with direct industry engagement and opportunities for fieldwork, sometimes requiring extended stays. Candidates should have strong communication and practical skills, a full driver’s license, and the ability to work collaboratively with industry partners. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and accountability are essential.

These positions are fully funded for three years, including a tax-free stipend of approximately $36,000 NZD per year, full tuition coverage, and research expenses.
