About this position

This interdisciplinary PhD position at KU Leuven offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of user-centric wireless networks and urban co-creation. Hosted within the Department of Electrical Engineering (Waves:Core Research and Engineering) and the Department of Architecture (Design and Engineering of Construction and Architecture), the research is primarily based in the DRAMCO group under the supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Gilles Callebaut. DRAMCO is renowned for its expertise in low-power wireless communication, distributed networks, and sensing technologies, leveraging advanced infrastructures such as the Techtile testbed for experimental validation.

The Faculty of Architecture contributes deep knowledge in spatial design, public space, and human–technology interaction, creating a vibrant interdisciplinary environment. The position is closely linked to the Creative Makers (CM³) initiative, which fosters collaboration between engineering, architecture, and the arts through hands-on making, prototyping, and experimental design. CM³ provides a platform for students to engage in creative and collaborative processes, and this PhD will extend these methodologies into scientific research, focusing on adaptive wireless networks.

The research investigates how citizens, spatial context, and devices collectively shape the behaviour of future wireless networks. Building on the Cocoon project's vision to rethink mobile infrastructure, the project explores the role of low-height, lightweight, and adaptable access points as meaningful elements of public space. The work is structured around two core pillars:

  • Spatial, Architectural, and Human-Space Analysis: Study how people interact with wireless systems in public and semi-public spaces, analysing the impact of urban form, materiality, and human presence on network performance. Employ spatial analysis, prototyping, and sensing-based observation as key methodologies.
  • Designing User-Centric, Co-Created Wireless Infrastructures: Develop new design principles for adaptive, energy-efficient, and citizen-driven networks. Create measurement-informed spatial maps, co-creation tools for citizens, and architectural strategies for integrating wireless components into the built environment. Prototype lightweight "contact service points" that respond to users and spatial dynamics.

The candidate will engage in measurement campaigns, wireless experimentation, spatial analysis, prototyping, and participatory design, aiming to establish a scientific foundation for open, adaptable, and architecturally embedded wireless infrastructure in cities.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master's degree with distinction and demonstrate excellent English proficiency. The position welcomes candidates from Architecture or Engineering (Electrical/ICT) who are motivated to work across disciplines. Experience with data-driven spatial analysis, prototyping, sensing technologies, human-space interaction, and participatory design is highly valued. Candidates should be hands-on, curious, and comfortable with both theoretical and experimental work.

Funding & Offer: The position is full-time and fixed-term for one year, renewable up to four years, with the intention of completing a full PhD trajectory.
