About this position

PFAS ultrashorts are an emerging group of environmental pollutants, often referred to as 'forever chemicals', that are increasingly being detected in the environment. This PhD project at Manchester Metropolitan University aims to develop and optimise advanced analytical methods for the detection and measurement of ultrashort PFAS using state-of-the-art techniques such as UPLC-ESI-HRQToFMS and GC-APCI-qqqMS. The research will involve systematic literature review, method development, and application of these methods to environmental samples from the UK and North America.

As a doctoral researcher, you will collaborate with a leading environmental consultancy (CDM Smith) to assess the effectiveness of novel remediation technologies designed to capture PFAS pollutants. You will join a vibrant research team in the new Dalton Building, equipped with specialised laboratory spaces and cutting-edge instrumentation. The project is supervised by Dr David Megson, an expert in environmental pollution analysis, and you will be part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s thriving doctoral college community.

The project’s objectives include developing robust detection methods for ultrashort PFAS, measuring their levels in various environments, and evaluating current remediation strategies. Candidates should have a strong motivation for environmental research, excellent analytical chemistry skills, and a minimum of a 2:1 degree in environmental science or chemistry. Experience with chromatography, mass spectrometry, and environmental sampling is highly desirable. The ability and willingness to travel to North America is required.

Funding is available for both Home and International students. Home tuition fees are fully covered for three years (£5,238 for 2026/27), while international students must cover the difference in tuition fees. A standard UKRI stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27) will be provided for the duration of the award. Applications close on 17 March 2026, with an expected start date in October 2026.

To apply, complete the online application form for a full-time PhD in Physical Sciences, submit the Doctoral Project Applicant Form, and upload your CV and covering letter via the University’s Admissions Portal. For queries, contact Dr David Megson at [email protected]. Please quote reference SciEng-DM-October 2026-27-PFAS Ultrashorts.
