About this position

This PhD studentship at the University of Leicester focuses on the development and testing of a behaviour change intervention to promote healthy living in individuals with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and/or abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). PAD and AAA are major global health concerns, particularly affecting older adults, and are associated with increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, dementia, leg amputations, and mental health issues. Despite strong recommendations for medication, exercise, and dietary improvements, most patients with PAD or AAA do not receive adequate treatment or lifestyle support.

The successful applicant will join the Cardiovascular Sciences department and work within the CIRCULIFE study, collaborating with a multidisciplinary supervisory team including Professor Athanasios Thanos Saratzis (NIHR Research Professor of Vascular Surgery), Dr Tom Withers (Associate Professor of Behaviour Change and Vascular Sciences), and Professor Edwardson (Professor in Sedentary Behaviour and Health). The PhD project aims to develop a new intervention, building on previous work such as the CRISP and CHABLIS interventions, with input from patients and healthcare professionals. The intervention will target key risk factors including smoking, diet, physical inactivity, and high blood pressure, and will be designed for implementation in both primary and secondary care settings.

This studentship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in complex intervention development, health psychology, and cardiovascular research. The research group has a strong track record in developing and evaluating interventions for vascular health, and the project will contribute to improving healthcare outcomes for high-risk populations.

Funding is provided through the NIHR Studentship, covering 3 years of UK tuition fees and a stipend (£21,805 per annum for 2026/7). International applicants are welcome but must fund the difference between UK and overseas fees (£19,012 per year for 2026/7), as well as visa, NHS charges, and travel costs. Applicants should have a relevant academic background (medical science, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy) and an interest in behaviour change and cardiovascular health.

To apply, review the information and instructions on the University of Leicester's funded opportunities webpage. Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Saratzis ([email protected]) or Dr Withers ([email protected]). The application deadline is April 21, 2026.
