The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, ETH Zürich, is seeking a PhD candidate to develop advanced multi-physics models of high-power medium frequency transformers (MFTs). The lab is internationally recognized for its research on power electronic converter systems, which are crucial for future energy distribution, renewable energy integration, and applications such as electric vehicles and medical devices. This PhD project is part of a new research initiative focused on solid-state transformers (SSTs) for next-generation data centres, where efficient, compact, and high-power transformers are essential for managing the increasing power demands of AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work on modelling and optimising MFTs, which are key components in high-power DC-DC converters. The research will involve developing multi-physics models that capture high-frequency losses, thermal management, resonances due to parasitic capacitances, and electrical insulation.
The candidate will also optimise core and winding geometry, design advanced cooling concepts, and develop solutions for high-current connections. These models will be integrated into optimisation procedures for power electronic converter systems, aiming to push the limits of efficiency and power density. The project includes hands-on work, such as designing and building MFT prototypes and converter systems to validate the developed models under realistic conditions.
