The Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in Learning-based Control for Autonomous Underwater Manipulation. This exciting opportunity is part of the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), a national initiative uniting leading robotics and AI groups to advance the science of embodied intelligence. The research will focus on developing and applying modern learning-based control and perception methods to enhance the autonomy and precision of underwater manipulation tasks, such as valve turning and object retrieval from the sea floor. The project will address robust perception in challenging underwater environments, leveraging visual and acoustic sensing for reliable object detection, scene understanding, and interaction. The ultimate goal is to enable the next generation of underwater robots to perform complex manipulation tasks fully autonomously, supporting subsea exploration, maintenance, and repair.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Kristin Y. Pettersen, with Professor Annette Stahl as co-supervisor. The position offers a unique chance to contribute to the development of physical AI, exploring how robot morphology and autonomy can be co-designed for optimal performance in aquatic environments. The candidate will be expected to conduct high-quality research, publish results, participate in international conferences or research stays, collaborate within and across departments, and supervise master's students related to the project.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or a closely related field, with strong training in control of marine vehicles and/or robots. Additional training in machine learning is advantageous. Candidates should have a strong academic record (B or better on the NTNU scale), solid programming skills, and a background in nonlinear control, robotic perception (vision/sonar), and mathematics. English proficiency is required for non-native speakers (TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge CAE/CPE). Only applicants from Norway, EU, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, or NATO countries are eligible to work with ITAR equipment, unless evidence of eligibility is provided.
Funding and Benefits: The position is fully funded for three years, with a gross annual salary starting from NOK 550,800, plus favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
