About this position

The University of Malaya, in collaboration with Hokkaido University and other international partners, is offering three PhD positions as part of the Malaysia-Japan Green Technologies in Renewable Energy initiative. The research focuses on the green conversion of palm oil industry waste into high-value renewable energy, specifically Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG), supporting Malaysia's renewable energy diversification and circular economy goals. The projects are funded under the MSE × NEXUS “Green Technology” Research Collaboration Grant (2026-2028).

Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from strong international exposure, including yearly research attachments at Hokkaido University, participation in international conferences, and collaboration with academia, industry, and government partners. The three PhD topics are: (1) Green Pretreatment of EFB for Enhanced Biogas Production, (2) Anaerobic Co-digestion and Microbial Process Optimization, and (3) Biogas Upgrading via Biochar-Based Technologies.

Applicants must be Malaysian nationals with a first-class degree in Chemical, Environmental, or Civil Engineering, or a research-mode Master's degree with 1-2 ISI publications. Candidates should be proactive, motivated, and possess strong communication skills. The program offers a monthly stipend of RM 3,200 for up to 36 months, a PhD tuition fee waiver, and opportunities for publications, patents, and business engagement.
