About this position

Monash University’s Faculty of Engineering is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity in Civil Engineering, based at the Clayton campus. This 3.5-year, full-time position is supported by a tax-free stipend of AUD 36,063 per annum (indexed), plus additional allowances in line with RTP stipend scholarship conditions.

The research project focuses on the development of ultra-low carbon concrete systems, with key themes including the integration of biochar derived from organic waste streams, carbon dioxide mineralisation and sequestration mechanisms, microstructural and durability characterisation of cementitious materials, and the translation of laboratory innovations into field-scale applications. The successful candidate will join a high-performing, industry-engaged research team renowned for pioneering biochar concrete field trials and internationally recognised work in sustainable construction materials.

Research activities will encompass laboratory experimentation, materials characterisation (mechanical, durability, and microstructural testing), carbon accounting, and potential field validation trials. The project is ideal for candidates passionate about sustainability, materials science, and innovative construction technologies.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (H1) in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, or a Master’s degree with a substantial research component. Preference will be given to those who graduated in the top 10% of their cohort, from a well-ranked university, and/or have authored peer-reviewed research publications. Strong laboratory and analytical skills, excellent written and verbal English, and experience in concrete technology, cement chemistry, materials science, carbon capture, or waste valorisation are highly desirable. Applicants must be able to enroll full-time and on campus; those already holding a PhD are not eligible.
