About this position
Constructor University Bremen, in partnership with Constructor Knowledge Labs and Constructor Technology, is offering a PhD position focused on the transformation of higher education and the science industry in the era of artificial intelligence. This opportunity is supervised by Professor Isak Frumin and is situated within the Observatory of Higher Education Innovations, a research group dedicated to monitoring and analyzing emerging demands and innovative practices in academia.
The research project aims to investigate how universities and research institutions are adapting their educational and research practices in response to AI technologies. Key questions include identifying early adopters and innovators in the use of AI tools, understanding new best practices and tools, and mapping the areas of science and education where these innovations are most rapidly emerging. The project involves cross-country monitoring through an expert network and dedicated research, providing regular updates on developments in the field.
The successful candidate will gain expertise in data-intensive higher education studies, the science of science, and the social impacts of AI. They will collaborate with internationally recognized experts in institutional analysis and higher education strategy, contributing to publications and policy-relevant outputs. The position is part-time (38.5 hours per week) and offers a monthly tax-free stipend, with possibilities for research-cost allowance and health-insurance subsidy.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in sociology, economics, political science, higher education studies, science and technology studies, data science/engineering, or computational social science. Strong analytical, research, and academic writing skills in English are required, evidenced by a Master's thesis, peer-reviewed publications, or equivalent research outputs. Demonstrated interest in technology applications in education/research, data analysis, or institutional transformation is expected, as shown through coursework, projects, or prior work. Hands-on research experience in qualitative methods, case studies, or data-intensive projects is necessary. Preferred qualifications include some proficiency in German (speaking/writing) and skills in code-based data analysis (e.g., Python, R, or Stata).
The application package must include a cover letter (1-2 pages) explaining fit with the project and qualifications, CV with publications/projects listed, Master's degree certificate/transcripts, contact details for 2-3 academic references, and evidence of English proficiency (if non-native, e.g., TOEFL/IELTS, experience). Optional materials include examples demonstrating analytical, research, and writing skills (e.g., publications, thesis, or other research outputs). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews. The preferred starting date is before April 2026.
