PhD Position: History of Interwar Czechoslovakia – Case Study Slovakia & Subcarpathian Ruthenia University of Basel in Switzerland

The Department of History at the University of Basel, Switzerland, is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD position as part of the research project "The Threatened Republic: Treason, Disloyalty, and the Defense of Democracy in Interwar Czechoslovakia." Led by Dr. Fabian Baumann and supported by a Starting Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, this project investigates the legal and political strategies employed by the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918–1938) to safeguard its democratic-republican system against internal and external threats.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team to explore case studies of anti-state movements and the state institutions responsible for defending democracy. The project focuses on the complex dilemmas faced by Czechoslovakia as it balanced the need to protect its integrity with the risks of undermining democratic principles through repressive measures. Special attention will be given to political trials and the negotiation between legitimate dissent and accusations of disloyalty, contributing to a broader understanding of democracy and its challenges in a period marked by nationalism, authoritarianism, and territorial disputes.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong background in history, political science, or law, and a keen interest in the history of democracy, legal and political history, and East Central Europe.
