About this position

KU Leuven, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join a research project focused on the stability of African dryland ecosystems. The project will utilize remote sensing and fieldwork to investigate ecological resilience and human–forest connections in these environments. Supervision will be provided by Sybryn Maes and Ben Somers from the Division of Forest, Nature and Landscape (FNL) at KU Leuven, with additional input from colleagues at the University of Copenhagen.

The research will address key questions in environmental science, biology, and geography, with a strong emphasis on ecosystem stability, remote sensing technologies, and field-based ecological data collection. The successful candidate will work in an international, interdisciplinary team and contribute to advancing our understanding of dryland ecosystem dynamics in Africa.

Applicants should hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate experience or strong interest in remote sensing, fieldwork, and data analysis. Proficiency in English and excellent communication skills are required. The position offers the opportunity to work at a leading European university and collaborate with international partners.

The application deadline is 20 March 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the provided link and prepare all necessary documents as outlined in the application portal. For further information, candidates may contact the supervisors directly.
