About this position

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of continuous real-time biomolecular sensing with single-molecule resolution. This exciting opportunity is based in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and focuses on developing innovative biosensing technology for the continuous monitoring of proteins and nucleic acids. The research is part of the Molecular Biosensing group (MBx), which is recognized for its unique sensing technologies based on reversible single-molecule interactions. The core platform, Biosensing by Particle Motion (BPM), enables the detection of biomolecules at low concentrations by observing particle motion changes due to single-molecular binding events.

The PhD project will involve designing and studying biomolecular aspects of BPM sensors, including affinity binders and conjugation strategies, to optimize sensor performance. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining molecular bioengineering, analytical chemistry, advanced data analysis, and optical microscopy. The MBx group collaborates with research institutes, academic hospitals, and biopharmaceutical companies, and organizes international competitions and symposia in the field of biosensing.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in engineering sciences or analytical sciences, such as bio-engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or analytical chemistry. Candidates must demonstrate a research-oriented attitude, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, interest in industrial collaboration, motivation to develop teaching skills, and fluency in English (C1 level).

The position offers a four-year full-time contract with a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid leave, and additional benefits such as training programs, technical infrastructure, childcare, sports facilities, and allowances for commuting and internet costs. International candidates may benefit from a tax compensation scheme. The university provides a vibrant, international research environment and encourages personal and professional growth.

To apply, candidates must submit a complete application online, including a cover letter, CV with publications and references, transcripts and degree certificates, and PDF copies of their BSc and MSc theses. The application deadline is January 4, 2026, but the vacancy will remain open until filled. For more information, applicants can contact Prof. Menno W.J. Prins or Dr. A.M. de Jong.
