About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain, is offering a PhD position in the Air Quality and Particle Technology group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. J. Wang. The successful candidate will join the Laboratory of Building Energy Materials and Components at Empa and will also be matriculated at ETH Zürich, providing access to world-class infrastructure and interdisciplinary research environments.

This PhD project centers on the development and application of electrochemistry for environmental challenges. The research will involve designing innovative electrode materials with precisely engineered nanostructures, fabricating these materials using advanced micro-nanofabrication technologies, and investigating their electrochemical mechanisms for both sensing and catalytic applications. The ultimate goal is to advance pollution mitigation and resource recovery through novel electrochemical approaches.

The group has a strong track record in developing electrochemical sensors for real-time detection of environmental pollutants, including airborne viruses, antibiotic resistance genes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs). Ongoing research includes investigations into electrode materials, manufacturing processes, and signal amplification and modulation, all aimed at strengthening the environmental applications of electrochemistry.

In addition to the core focus on electrochemistry, the group is active in nanomaterial engineering, micro-optics, and microfluidics, offering a broad spectrum of research opportunities for the PhD candidate. The position is ideal for candidates with a master’s degree in chemical engineering, material science, environmental engineering, or related fields, who possess excellent grades and strong experimental skills. Proficiency in English is required.

Empa fosters a culture of inclusion and respect, welcoming individuals interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful research activities. The position is set to start from June 2026 or upon agreement. While funding details are not specified, the opportunity to work within Empa and ETH Zürich ensures access to excellent resources and support.
