About this position

The STEM-CORE consortium, supported by the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Medical Science at Linköping University, Sweden, in the research group of Professor Neil Lagali. The STEM-CORE project brings together 14 doctoral candidates from 9 European countries to explore strategies for developing robust, affordable, and sustainable cell therapies and biomaterials to restore eyesight. The focus of this PhD thesis is on translational, in vivo models for evaluating cell-based therapies for the cornea. Research activities include evaluating various methods for stem cell delivery to the cornea, tracking delivered cells using genetic or fluorescence-based labeling, and assessing the efficacy of therapies in mouse models of limbal stem cell deficiency using histochemical and omics-based methods.

The position involves three short visits to partner laboratories across Europe to learn advanced techniques in cell delivery, immunologic characterization, live cell tracking, and multi-omics data analysis. The research group at the Department of Sense Organs and Communication (SOK), BKV, focuses on developing new therapies for severe vision impairment, utilizing cell models and surgical techniques to test innovative drugs, biomaterials, and medical devices. Collaboration with international research groups and short research stays at partner institutions are integral to the program.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, or equivalent qualifications, with strong skills in molecular biology techniques. Experience with stem cells, in vivo models, microsurgery, or computational methods is advantageous but not required. Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment, in accordance with MSCA mobility rules. Proficiency in English, a proactive and collaborative attitude, and willingness to travel and learn new techniques are essential.
