Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions, is offering a PhD position in plant science at the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The research focuses on the molecular mechanisms shaping flower development in tomato, with a particular emphasis on symmetry breaking processes. This interdisciplinary project combines genome engineering, live cell imaging, computational modelling, genomics, proteomics, and protein engineering to uncover the molecular regulators, including microproteins, that control flower development.

The PhD student will work at the Department of Plant Physiology, part of UPSC, which is recognized as one of Europe’s strongest research environments for basic plant research. The project involves both experimental and computational approaches, providing opportunities to develop skills in advanced molecular biology techniques and mathematical modelling. The research environment is collaborative and multidisciplinary, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field. Specific requirements include a completed advanced degree (second-cycle) or equivalent, with at least 90 ECTS in Biology or related subjects, and good proficiency in English. Experience in tomato cultivation, transformation, and molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, and protein biochemistry is highly valued. The position is fully funded, with salary according to the university’s PhD salary ladder, and is intended to result in a doctoral degree. The employment is limited to four years full-time or up to five years with part-time teaching.
