About this position

The University of Bremen's MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences is offering a four-year PhD position in the Organic Geochemistry group as part of the ERC Synergy Project "Archean Park." This interdisciplinary project aims to uncover ancient and novel carbon fixation pathways by studying life under early-Earth conditions, focusing on the metabolic processes of microorganisms during the Archean era (4,000–2,500 million years ago). The research is conducted in collaboration with teams from the Universities of Bremen, Duisburg Essen, Münster, and the Helmholtz Center for Geoscience (GFZ) Potsdam.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international research environment and benefit from a comprehensive doctoral training program at the MARUM Research Academy, which includes subject-specific and soft-skill courses. The PhD project involves analyzing the compositional diversity of natural organic compounds in enrichment cultures and environmental samples from volcanic CO2 vents, conducting stable carbon isotope tracer experiments, and characterizing new chemoautotrophic metabolic pathways. The role also includes participation in sampling campaigns across Germany and Europe, close collaboration with project partners, and dissemination of results through publications and conferences.

Applicants should hold a master's degree in geosciences, chemistry, or biology, with solid knowledge in organic geochemistry and/or microbial biogeochemistry. Practical experience in mass spectrometry and chromatography is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English, teamwork, and communication in an international setting.

What's required
