About this position

The Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship department at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position in the areas of strategic management or entrepreneurship. This position offers the unique opportunity for candidates to freely choose their own research topic within the department’s expertise, focusing on how organizations build and retain sustained competitive advantage amidst current business and societal challenges.

Potential research topics include corporate ownership and governance strategy, scaling and high-growth firms, innovation in high-tech and knowledge-intensive industries, and the strategic adaptation of organizations to volatile environments. The program is designed to train the next generation of academics who address societally relevant questions with original research that meets the highest methodological standards. PhD students will benefit from a multidisciplinary faculty, research seminars, and the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across departments and universities.

Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged, particularly those with master’s degrees in business, economics, psychology, sociology, information systems, applied mathematics/statistics, or industrial engineering. Experience or a strong interest in quantitative methods, such as econometrics, is preferred. Candidates should be creative, self-directed, and passionate about scientific research. The program emphasizes empirical, quantitative research using primary and secondary data, including large databases, experiments, and unstructured textual data.

PhD candidates will define and execute their own research projects with the support of a supervisory team. The position includes a competitive salary (€3,059 - €3,881 per month) and funding for a 3- to 6-month research visit at a top international university, fostering a strong international research network. The expected output includes publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and a PhD dissertation.

The department values research that addresses grand societal challenges, such as sustainability transitions, AI, globalization, and migration, and is committed to inclusivity and equal opportunity.
