About this position

TUD Dresden University of Technology, recognized as a University of Excellence, is offering a full-time PhD position within the MSCA Doctoral Network SLICE at the Chair of Space Systems, Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering. The project focuses on the numerical modelling of atmospheric emissions resulting from the ablation and demise of space vehicles during re-entry, with a particular emphasis on their propagation and climate impact. The successful candidate will join an international group of over 30 researchers and collaborate with leading institutions such as the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (Belgium) and Astos Solutions GmbH (Germany) through secondments.

The research objectives include defining suitable interface regions, conducting numerical analyses of emission propagation in the near field of re-entering vehicles, performing multiscale simulations of downstream expansion behavior in various atmospheric layers, and developing interfaces for climate model data processing. Expected outcomes are the ability to assess the influence of the demise process on emissions in different atmospheric layers, creation of numerical models for dispersion behavior, and derivation of parameters for regional atmospheric effect calculations.

Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field, and possess strong knowledge in physical and analytical chemistry, computer science (numerical analysis, simulation, optimization, modelling tools, CFD), space engineering, fluid mechanics, and applied physics. Additional expertise in EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, and project management is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent English communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work both independently and in diverse teams. Eligibility to enroll in a PhD program at TU Dresden is required, and applicants must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and Eligibility Criteria.

The position is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) program, offering a competitive salary according to MSCA regulations, including living, mobility, and family allowances where applicable. Funding is also available for training, conference participation, and secondments. The employment contract is limited to 36 months, starting October 1, 2026, with a maximum end date of December 2029.

Candidates must be able to work efficiently and self-reliantly in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environment, as well as in a team and independently. Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal) are essential. Applicants must be ready to travel for secondments and events. Eligibility to enroll in a PhD program at TU Dresden is required. Knowledge of the host institution language is a plus. Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master’s degree but must have it before employment. Applicants must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and Eligibility Criteria: not have resided or carried out main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment, and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.
