PhD Position: Understanding Pre-Metastatic Niches in Translational Medicine Heidelberg University in Germany

This PhD position at Heidelberg University, offered through the HBIGS Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School, focuses on understanding pre-metastatic niches in translational medicine. The research aims to unravel the mechanisms by which specific cell types in healthy tissue support the engraftment and colonization of cancer cells, particularly in the bone marrow. The project’s first goal is to characterize these niche-supporting cells and investigate their role in promoting metastasis in other organs, thereby deciphering the complex interactions between tumor cells and their microenvironment.

Key experimental approaches include in vitro studies using primary cells and cancer cell lines, targeted cell manipulations, and in vivo experiments in mouse models. The project is designed to provide mechanistic insights into metastatic processes and offers the opportunity to acquire advanced skills in cellular and molecular biology. By manipulating key molecules in both tumor cells and the microenvironment, the research aims to systematically analyze the effects on metastatic colonization and lay the foundation for potential therapeutic strategies.

The position is based at the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, and is fully funded according to DFG guidelines for doctoral researchers in biology (65% TVöD).
