About this position

Kiel University, through its KiNSIS (Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science) community, is offering three exciting PhD positions in cutting-edge research areas. These positions are embedded in a dynamic, international environment focused on small-scale science with big impact.

1. Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Adsorption & Sensing
Join the Porous Materials Group at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry under Professor Norbert Stock. The project involves developing new Al- and Zr-MOFs, high-throughput synthesis, and advanced characterization techniques such as XRD and gas/vapor sorption. Candidates should have a Master’s in chemistry (preferably inorganic), experience with synthesis and crystalline compounds, and strong lab independence. The position starts March 1, 2026, is 50% TV-L E13, and lasts 3 years. More info.

2. Photoswitch Design & Structure–Property Relationships
Work with Professor Anne Staubitz at the Otto Diels Institute for Organic Chemistry. The research focuses on synthesizing and studying photoswitch molecules, combining organic synthesis, spectroscopy, and DFT. Responsibilities include analysis, interpretation, publication, and student supervision. Applicants need a Master’s in organic chemistry, hands-on synthesis and spectroscopy experience, and strong German & English skills. The position is 50% TV-L E13 for 4 years, starting ASAP. More info.

3. Nanoparticle Networks for Neuromorphic Computing
Join Professor Lorenz Kienle at the Department of Materials Science, Chair of Synthesis and Real Structure. The project uses advanced TEM/SEM to explore 2D–3D nanoparticle networks for memristive and reservoir computing, with collaboration on fabrication and electrical testing. Applicants should have a Master’s in physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or electrical engineering, interest in TEM/SEM, Python skills, and a collaborative mindset. The position is 75% TV-L E13 for 3 years. More info.

All positions are fully funded at TV-L E13, with durations of 3–4 years. The application deadlines are December 17, 19, and 31, 2025, respectively. For details and to apply, visit the provided links. These opportunities are ideal for candidates passionate about chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology, seeking to advance their research careers in a collaborative and innovative setting at Kiel University.
