The Medical University of Graz is seeking two motivated PhD candidates to join the Laboratory of Computer-Aided Molecular Design, led by Associate Professor Pedro A Sánchez-Murcia. The research focuses on advanced ion channel modelling, specifically targeting the molecular modelling of human TRPC channels under (patho)physiological conditions and the modelling of cholesterol binding on SK3 K+ channels. Both projects involve close collaboration with experimental teams and offer training in state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulation techniques and computational approaches for biological systems.

Project 1 investigates the pathophysiology of TRPC3 and related TRPC channels in the context of lipid membranes using advanced simulation techniques. The aim is to understand how amino acid mutations impact TRPC channel function, dynamics, and disease relevance, and to design modulators for TRPC function. Project 2 focuses on the role of cholesterol in SK3 channel regulation, using deep-learning structure algorithms, free energy, and chemical dynamics simulations to identify crucial sites for cholesterol-mediated modulation and to validate binding sites.

Applicants should have a strong background in molecular biology, biophysics, chemistry, or related fields, and experience with molecular dynamics or computational modelling is highly desirable. The positions are fully funded, with a start date expected on October 1, 2026, and an application deadline of March 22, 2026.
