About this position

The Somers-Fraussen Lab at Hasselt University is seeking ambitious PhD candidates to join their research team in neuroimmunology and autoimmunity. The lab focuses on the role of B cells and antibodies in complex neurological and autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, immune aging, and arthritic diseases. Research projects utilize cutting-edge single-cell technologies, high-dimensional flow cytometry, and advanced molecular and cellular techniques to discover and validate novel autoantibody biomarkers and to characterize the functional involvement of B cells in disease pathology.

Current PhD opportunities include projects on: (1) the contribution of B cells to neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis, (2) the driving factors of post-injury B cell responses and antibody biomarkers for prognosis in spinal cord injury, and (3) the identification and evaluation of antibody biomarkers in arthritic diseases such as psoriatic arthritis. These projects combine patient sample analysis, functional immunology, mechanistic studies, and translational research aimed at identifying new therapeutic targets and improving patient outcomes.

The lab is highly experienced in human B cell analysis, both phenotypically and functionally, and has developed an optimized pipeline for autoantibody discovery, validation, and characterization. Candidates will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative and supportive environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and guidance from experienced researchers.

Funding for these PhD positions is not provided internally; instead, selected candidates will receive full support to co-apply for external PhD fellowships (such as FWO). Applicants should have a relevant master's degree, a strong background in immunology, neuroscience, or biomedical sciences, and proficiency in English. Experience with laboratory techniques is advantageous. Interested candidates should send their CV and motivation letter to [email protected] and review the attached document for detailed project descriptions.

For more information about the lab and its research, visit the Somers-Fraussen Lab website.

What's required

Applicants should have a strong background in immunology, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Experience with laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, or molecular biology is advantageous. Candidates must be highly motivated, able to work independently and in a team, and possess good communication skills. A relevant master's degree is required. Proficiency in English is expected. Specific requirements may depend on the fellowship program (e.g., FWO).

How to apply
