Description

The University of Duisburg-Essen is offering two PhD positions in the field of Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry, supervised by Professor Jochen Niemeyer. The research will focus on the development and application of interlocked molecules, such as rotaxanes and catenanes, for use in organocatalysis and molecular sensing. The positions are based in the Faculty of Chemistry, one of the largest in Germany, and offer a dynamic, international research environment.

PhD Position 1 centers on the project “Interlocked molecules for Organocatalysis.” The successful candidate will synthesize, characterize, and apply novel organocatalysts for enantioselective catalysis, with a focus on catalysts based on interlocked molecules. The work will involve advanced organic synthesis, analysis of supramolecular interactions, and the use of modern analytical techniques such as NMR, MS, XRD, UV/Vis, HPLC, and titration. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to scientific publications and present results at conferences.

PhD Position 2 is part of a joint project with Prof. Joohoon Kim (Kyung Hee University, South Korea) on “Stimuli-responsive rotaxanes as a novel molecular switching platform for ratiometric electrochemiluminescent sensors.” The project includes the synthesis and application of ECL-rotaxanes for detecting analytes in environmental and biological samples. The candidate will have the opportunity to spend 4-6 months in the partner lab in Seoul, gaining experience in electroanalytical chemistry and advanced analytical methods.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a Master’s or Diplom degree (minimum 4 years) in chemistry or a related field, with a strong background in organic synthesis. Additional experience in supramolecular chemistry, organocatalysis, or electrochemistry is advantageous. Fluency in English is required for the joint project. Applicants should be motivated, passionate about research, and able to work in an international team.

Funding: Both positions are funded at 67% of a full-time salary (EG 13 TV-L) for 42 months, with benefits including public transport, family-friendly policies, and access to university sports and health programs.

Application: Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and (for the joint project) a list of publications, quoting the relevant reference number. Send applications to Prof. Jochen Niemeyer at [email protected]. More information about the group and projects can be found at the group website.

Deadlines: Position 1: January 5, 2026. Position 2: January 22, 2026.

The University of Duisburg-Essen is committed to diversity and equal opportunity. Women and disabled persons are especially encouraged to apply.

Funding

The positions are paid according to EG 13 TV-L (67% of a full-time position) for 42 months. The funding covers salary and includes benefits such as a company ticket for public transport, family-friendly policies, and access to university sports and health programs. No explicit mention of tuition fees, but these are typically covered for doctoral positions in Germany.

How to apply

Submit your application with the usual documents (cover letter, CV, list of publications) quoting the relevant reference number to Prof. Jochen Niemeyer at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Email applications to [email protected]. Check the group website for further information.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master’s or Diplom degree (minimum 4 years) in chemistry or a related field. A strong background in organic synthesis is required. Additional experience in supramolecular chemistry, organocatalysis, or electrochemistry is advantageous. Fluency in English (oral and written) is required for the joint project. Applicants should be passionate about organic and supramolecular chemistry and possess skills in the purification and analysis of organic molecules.
