About this position

KU Leuven invites applications for several PhD positions in Pure Mathematics, funded by the long-term Methusalem program. The positions are part of the collaborative research project "Classification, symmetries and singularities at the frontiers of algebra, analysis and geometry," which brings together expertise from multiple research groups to tackle challenging problems in algebra, analysis, and geometry. The project covers a broad spectrum of mathematical research, including algebraic and arithmetic geometry, random matrices and complex analysis, differential geometry, functional analysis and operator algebras, as well as algebraic topology and group theory. Special consideration is given to candidates interested in interdisciplinary work bridging two or more of these areas.

PhD students will join a vibrant academic environment with regular colloquia, seminars, and advanced courses, fostering collaboration and exposure to diverse mathematical topics. All PhD students will have limited teaching duties. KU Leuven is committed to improving gender balance and diversity within its pure mathematics research groups and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups.

Applicants should hold a master's degree in mathematics or an equivalent qualification, with a strong research interest demonstrated by their master thesis. Master students who expect to graduate before August 2026 are also eligible. Fluency in English is required; Dutch is not necessary. The positions offer a competitive four-year PhD stipend, funding for conference participation and short research stays at other institutions, as well as health insurance and social benefits for the student and their accompanying partner and/or children. The starting date is flexible, preferably before 1 October 2026.

To apply, candidates must submit an online application including three PDF files: a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae (listing three references, master thesis topic, tentative graduation date, and any preprints or publications), and transcripts of bachelor and master studies. References will be contacted only for shortlisted candidates. Applications can be withdrawn and resubmitted until the deadline. For further information, contact Prof. dr. Karel Dekimpe at [email protected].

KU Leuven fosters an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity as an asset and striving for equal opportunity. The university does not tolerate discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, skin colour, religious or philosophical beliefs, neurodivergence, disability, health, or socioeconomic status. Accessibility and support inquiries are welcome via the provided contact email.
