This fully funded PhD studentship, offered in partnership between Brentford Football Club and Cardiff Metropolitan University, focuses on the fitness preparation of Premier League soccer players through the microcycle. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research environment, combining academic study with hands-on practitioner experience in elite football. The project aims to establish a theoretically informed programme of periodisation and fitness preparation, optimizing performance strategies for elite football players.

As a PhD student, you will plan and complete a research programme related to football performance, engage in applied sport and coaching science training, and assist in delivering Brentford FC's performance strategy. Duties include data collection, management, analysis, performance testing, and reporting, with opportunities to work with senior squads and attend games and training camps. Research may also involve younger age groups within the club.

The studentship provides a three-year bursary plus tuition fees at the UK rate, with a stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27, matching RCUK rates. Subsequent years will follow RCUK annual stipend updates. The project is supervised by Dr John Radnor and Ryland Morgans, both with extensive experience in sports science and elite football environments.

Applicants must have a strong academic track record, holding a good BSc (Hons) in sports science, coaching science, strength and conditioning, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification is desirable. Experience in applied research and practitioner knowledge in sports science, coaching science, strength and conditioning, fitness, or related activities within elite sport is essential. Experience working in football is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate activity towards accreditation in a relevant professional body, possess excellent communication skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility in working hours is required.
