About this position

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand is offering PhD scholarship opportunities in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (RS-GIS) for the August 2026 intake. The RS-GIS program at AIT is a multidisciplinary field established in 1990, providing advanced education and research in remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, geospatial data, digital photogrammetry, WebGIS, big data, deep learning, and spatial analysis. The curriculum is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including laboratory sessions and hands-on experience with spatial data, airborne and spaceborne sensors, and cloud-based applications.

PhD candidates will benefit from a diverse and internationally recognized faculty, including Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Dr. Sarawut Ninsawat, Dr. Salvatore G.P. Virdis, Prof. Kiyoshi Honda, Dr. Masahiko Nagai, Dr. Apichon Witayangkurn, Prof. Tai Nakamura, Dr. Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Prof. Ryosuke Shibasaki, Dr. Marc Souris, Dr. Chitrini Mozumder, Dr. Sanit Arunplod, and Dr. Surat Lertlum. Research focus areas include remote sensing, GIS, GNSS technology, geospatial data, digital photogrammetry, WebGIS, big data, and deep learning, with applications in earth science, environmental science, and infrastructure.

Applicants must have a master's degree in remote sensing, GIS, or a related field such as information technology, computer science, civil engineering, earth science, or environmental science. Required application materials include academic degrees, transcripts, a research proposal, English proficiency scores, and references. The program welcomes candidates from diverse backgrounds with a passion for geospatial science and research.

Funding is available through multiple scholarship schemes, including RTG Fellowships and AIT scholarships, which may cover tuition, research support, and living expenses. The RTG Fellowship deadline is 31 March 2026, while general AIT scholarship applications are open until approximately 10 June 2026. Applicants are encouraged to check the official AIT website for the most up-to-date information on scholarship categories and deadlines.

To apply, candidates should visit the AIT Admissions portal, complete the online application form, and indicate their interest in financial support. Preparation of key documents is essential for a successful application. This opportunity is ideal for those interested in advancing their expertise in remote sensing, GIS, geospatial analytics, and related fields within a globally diverse academic community.
