About this position

Linköping University invites applications for a PhD student position in AI and autonomous systems, focusing on Vision-Language-Action (VLA) Models for controlling multiple heterogeneous robots. This research is led by Professor Fredrik Heintz and Dr. Mariusz Wzorek, and will be conducted in close collaboration with the field robotics lab (AILAB) and partners from both the public and private sectors. The successful candidate will join the Reasoning and Learning Lab (ReaL) within the Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS) at the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA).

The PhD project centers on developing and applying VLA models to enable advanced control of multi-robot systems. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering opportunities to collaborate with leading experts in AI, machine learning, robotics, and related fields. Linköping University is recognized as an AI research excellence center, coordinating major initiatives such as the TrustLLM EU project and hosting the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), as well as the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS).

As a PhD student, you will primarily focus on your doctoral studies and research, with the possibility of teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of your time. The position is funded by ELLIIT (Excellence Center at Linköping–Lund in Information Technology), a government-funded strategic research area in IT and mobile communications. The employment is typically for four years full-time, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching and institutional assignments. The initial contract is for one year, with renewals based on progress.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent, with strong knowledge in computer science, mathematics, algorithms, and programming. Experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI is highly valued. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in computer science or have completed courses totaling at least 240 credits, with at least 60 credits in advanced courses in computer science, mathematics, AI, machine learning, or similar. Equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways is also acceptable. Good knowledge of computer science, mathematics, algorithms, and programming is required. Experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning is expected but not strictly required. Experience in deep learning and generative AI is an advantage. Undergraduate research experience is a merit. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; Swedish language skills are a merit. Applicants should be team-oriented, willing to learn and share knowledge, and able to work independently.
