About this position
This PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham offers an exciting opportunity to explore the frontiers of quantum engineering and dimensionality tuning in exotic 2D materials. The project is embedded within the School of Physics and Astronomy, a recognized Institute of Physics Juno Champion and Athena SWAN Silver Award holder, reflecting its commitment to diversity, equality, and an inclusive research environment.
As a student, you will engage in experimental low-temperature physics, working with nanofabrication, high-pressure measurements, extreme magnetic fields, and milliKelvin temperatures to investigate and tune the properties of novel low-dimensional materials. The research is supported by a major UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, focusing on the identification, synthesis, and exploration of new 2D materials with the aim of discovering exotic quantum functionalities for sustainable electronics and advanced computing applications.
The group’s approach is comprehensive: you will participate in the synthesis of single crystals and nanoscale devices within a cleanroom environment, utilize advanced characterization techniques such as pressure cells and custom cryogenic equipment, and travel to international facilities for neutron and X-ray diffraction studies. This hands-on experience across all aspects of the research process will equip you with a broad skill set, including laboratory techniques, component design and manufacture, advanced data analysis, and programming.
Students will join a cohesive and friendly team within the wider condensed matter group, benefiting from exposure to diverse research ideas and collaborative opportunities. The project encourages applications from all qualified candidates, especially those from under-represented groups in physics and astronomy, including women and Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic individuals.
Funding is fully available for domestic (UK) candidates, with options to support exceptional overseas applicants. The position provides a unique platform for developing independence and flexibility in your future research career, whether in academia or industry.
Eligibility requires a first or upper second class degree in physics, materials science, or a closely related field. Experience in experimental physics, nanofabrication, or materials synthesis is beneficial but not mandatory. Strong laboratory, data analysis, and programming skills are advantageous. For further information or informal inquiries, contact Dr Matt Coak at [email protected].
Applications should be submitted via the provided link before the deadline of December 31, 2026. Prepare your academic transcripts and CV, and ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum materials and join a vibrant academic community at the University of Birmingham.
