The University of Hertfordshire is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Light Scattering by Single Particles Relevant for Atmospheric Research, based at the Hatfield, College Lane campus. This three-year, full-time position begins on 1 October 2026 and is situated within the Atmospheric and Climate Physics (ACP) group. The project focuses on both experimental and theoretical aspects of light scattering by single particles, a topic central to climate and atmospheric research.
Experimental work will involve the development of laser diffractometry for light scattering measurements on single levitated particles, polarimetry, and particle characterisation using optical and scanning microscopy. Theoretical research will address unresolved questions about light scattering by atmospheric particles, such as the effects of particle complexity and surface roughness, using computational methods including physical optics and the discrete dipole approximation.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with ACP colleagues and have opportunities to present their research at international conferences. The supervisory team includes Dr Evelyn Hesse (principal supervisor) and Professor Detlef Mueller, both experts in atmospheric physics.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree (2.1 or above) or a Master’s degree (if BSc is 2.2) in Physics or related subjects. Relevant laboratory experience (e.g., laser and optical instrumentation) and computational/numerical modelling skills (e.g., Python, C++) are desirable. The position is open to UK, EU, and international applicants. Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English language competence (minimum IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
Funding includes a full tuition fee waiver for three years and an annual stipend at UK Research Council rates (£20,780 for 2025-2026). Applicants requiring a student visa must cover visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs themselves.
