About this position

DISACT (Disappearing Act), an ERC-funded project at the University of Cyprus, is recruiting two full-time research positions focused on enforced disappearances, political violence, and the evolution of disappearance-related practices across historical and contemporary contexts.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will work on post-9/11 detention practices, extraordinary rendition, offshore detention regimes, and transnational repression. The role requires close engagement with legal texts, court rulings, legislative debates, and executive documentation, with a strong background in law, political science, security studies, or related fields.

The Pre-Doctoral Researcher will study the historical diffusion of enforced disappearances, with a focus on the Algerian War and North Africa. This position emphasizes archival and historically grounded research, and candidates with French language skills are especially encouraged; Arabic is highly desirable.

Both positions are embedded in an interdisciplinary team at the intersection of political science, law, and modern history. The project is led by Prof. Iosif Kovras and the application contact is Dr. Michalis Moutselos. The positions are full-time, last 4 months, and may be renewed after evaluation. Salary is €1750–€2600 gross per month depending on experience and qualifications.

Applicants should submit a CV, a statement describing academic/research experience and motivation, and transcripts by 2026-04-20. The postdoctoral call also requests MSc/PhD transcripts, while the pre-doctoral call requests degree transcripts. Start date is as soon as possible, no later than June 1, 2026.
