About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral assistant position in the Department of Animal Sciences and Aquatic Ecology, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. This opportunity is ideal for researchers with expertise in nutrition, digestion, and gastrointestinal physiology in farm animals, as well as those interested in the digestion of animal-based and alternative protein-rich foods. The research focus includes the formation and biological activity of metabolites during enzymatic digestion and microbial fermentation, and their interactions with gut microbiota and gastrointestinal tissues. Both in vitro digestion models and in vivo animal studies are employed to gain mechanistic insights and physiologically relevant responses, with a central aim to improve the translation of in vitro findings to in vivo effects.

The position leverages advanced methodologies such as chromatographic separation techniques for metabolite profiling and quantitative PCR for gene expression analyses in gastrointestinal and other relevant tissues. The successful candidate will integrate these approaches into ongoing and new research projects, contributing to the development of the LANUPRO research and service profile within the department.

In addition to research, the post-doctoral assistant will assist in teaching animal sciences at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level, counsel Master’s students in their exercises, work placements, and dissertations, and provide guidance to doctoral students. Active participation in the acquisition of research funding and exploration of relevant funding opportunities is expected. Knowledge of Dutch is considered an asset for teaching and student interaction.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field, with demonstrable expertise in nutrition, digestion, and gastrointestinal physiology in farm animals and/or humans. Experience with in vitro and in vivo model systems, microbiota, metabolite formation, and gene expression is highly valued. Candidates should have a record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and a strong interest in coaching students at various academic levels. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.

The appointment is temporary for 3 years, with the possibility of extension for another 3 years upon positive evaluation. Remuneration is determined according to salary scale AAP5, and Ghent University offers a comprehensive benefits package including training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more.

Applications must be submitted online through the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 24 February 2026. Required documents include a CV (with scientific publications), cover letter, diploma transcript, and certificate of equivalence (if applicable). For diplomas in languages other than Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided. Late or non-online applications will not be accepted. For further information about the vacancy, contact Prof. Veerle Fievez at [email protected].
