About this position
Join the Social Perception Lab at Karolinska Institutet for a postdoctoral position focused on the development of artificial sensory modalities to enhance social cognition. This innovative research group investigates how the human brain encodes the minds of others, exploring the intersection of social cognition, attentional processing, and gaze perception. The lab utilizes advanced methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), behavioral and psychophysical approaches, eye tracking, motion capture, and intracranial EEG recordings in neurosurgical patients.
As a postdoc, you will lead one of two new projects centered on integrating a state-of-the-art motion capture system with portable eye tracking devices and a programmable full-body haptic suit. This setup will allow research participants to physically sense another person’s gaze as a touch to the skin, enabling real-world experimental paradigms to train specific aspects of social perception. The research targets both neurotypical individuals and those with social interaction challenges, such as autism.
The Social Perception Lab offers a dynamic, international environment with opportunities for collaboration within the department and with prominent research groups worldwide. You are encouraged to develop your own research ideas in social cognition, attention, and theory of mind. The lab provides access to cutting-edge MRI scanners, including a new 7T scanner, and a MEG system (Elekta Neuromag TRIUX 306-channel).
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities, renowned for its successful medical research and comprehensive medical education. The university fosters creative and inspiring collaborations across scientific fields, maintaining close relationships with healthcare providers to drive groundbreaking research and education. As a state university, KI offers several benefits through its collective agreement.
Eligibility requires a PhD or equivalent, preferably completed within the last three years, with exceptions for special circumstances. Candidates must demonstrate strong research experience in motion capture, eye tracking, machine learning, or advanced behavioral analyses, and possess an excellent academic track record with publications in high-quality international journals. English proficiency in writing and speaking is essential. Personal skills and characteristics will be evaluated during interviews.
Applications should include a PhD certificate, a complete resumé, a list of publications, and a summary of current work, submitted through the Varbi recruitment system. The position is full-time, temporary, and offers a monthly salary with benefits. The application deadline is April 6, 2026. For questions about eligibility or future positions, contact the PI, Arvid Guterstam.
Take this opportunity to contribute to high-quality research at the forefront of cognitive neuroscience and social cognition, and help advance understanding of how artificial sensory modalities can improve social perception and health outcomes.
