About this position

The iGRIDS research group at AAU Energy, Aalborg University, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year, full-time position in Integrated and Flexible Electricity and District Cooling Networks. The successful candidate will join the Section for Electric Power Systems and Microgrids at the Department of Energy, contributing to the development of future integrated energy systems that support the green transition. The research focuses on the market-driven operation and economic optimization of integrated electricity–cooling systems, with a particular emphasis on district cooling networks in both greenfield and brownfield urban contexts.

Key research areas include modelling, analysis, and optimization of flexible cooling assets and integrated building-level electricity–cooling devices, enabling dynamic participation in multi-energy markets at both building and district scales. The postdoc will develop high-fidelity techno-economic models of chillers, heat pumps, and thermal energy storage, capturing thermodynamic behavior, operational limits, and flexibility potential. Coordinated integration of cooling systems with electricity grids, renewable generation, and storage for system-level optimization is a core aspect of the work. The position also involves designing business cases and market-oriented dispatch strategies, as well as validating solutions using digital twins and experimental testbeds.

Another research direction addresses the economic optimization of brownfield district cooling systems, including retrofitting strategies, cost-sharing, and pricing mechanisms to support integration in built-up districts. Scenario-based optimization of system sizing and capacity expansion, as well as integration of operational feedback into financial, regulatory, and policy tools, are part of the role. The postdoc will contribute to investment and business models balancing energy efficiency, operational reliability, and economic viability at both building and district scales.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (with a focus on heating and cooling systems), or a closely related discipline. Experience with design and modelling of cooling systems, performance evaluation of district cooling networks, techno-economic analysis, and market-driven operation and optimization of integrated electricity–cooling or multi-energy systems is highly relevant. Advanced optimization techniques, digital twin modelling, and strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar environments are required. English proficiency at CEFR C1 or IELTS 6.5 or higher is highly recommended.

AAU Energy is a dynamic, internationally oriented research department dedicated to developing clean and sustainable energy systems. The iGRIDS group offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with regular group meetings, joint publications, and opportunities to shape the research agenda within integrated electricity and cooling systems. The position is based at the Aalborg campus, with access to advanced laboratory and workshop facilities and a supportive onboarding process for new staff.

Applications must be submitted via Aalborg University’s recruitment system, including a cover letter, CV, diplomas, list of publications, up to five selected publications, documentation of teaching and dissemination qualifications, and references. The application deadline is 13 March 2026. For more information, visit the AAU Energy website or contact the research group leader.
