About this position

This postdoctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is part of Centre X, a collaborative initiative involving leading academic and industrial partners such as Chalmers University of Technology, Scania CV AB, and AB Volvo. The research focuses on surface texture control and characterization for advanced manufacturing systems, with a particular emphasis on precision machining for next-generation powertrain applications. The successful candidate will conduct both experimental and theoretical research on the control and characterization of surface integrity in high-performance machining processes. Key responsibilities include studying and applying ISO standards (ISO 25178, ISO 21920, ISO 16610) for 2D and 3D surface roughness and waviness parameters, and investigating their impact on component performance and reliability. The research will link machining parameters—such as tool geometry, cutting speed, feed rate, and lubrication—to resulting surface characteristics, with a strong focus on how process-induced surface features affect functional performance, including fatigue and wear. The postdoc will utilize advanced 3D metrology techniques, such as focus variation microscopy and white light interferometry, to quantitatively assess surface texture and integrity. Experience with computational modelling and simulation of surface generation processes (e.g., FEM-based simulations) is essential. The position offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating closely with international and industrial partners to translate research findings into practical solutions for advanced manufacturing. The postdoc may also participate in teaching activities at various academic levels. Applicants must have a recent doctoral degree in Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, with documented expertise in surface texture control and precision machining. Proficiency in English and a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals are required. Preferred qualifications include experience in industrial collaboration, computational modelling, teamwork, communication, project management, and teaching. The position is full-time, for up to two years, and offers a monthly salary with attractive benefits. KTH is committed to equality, diversity, and providing a creative and dynamic environment for professional growth. Applications must be submitted online through KTH's recruitment system by the specified deadline, including all required documents and references.

What's required

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a thesis focused on machining or manufacturing processes, obtained within the last three years. Documented research expertise in surface texture control and precision machining is required, including hands-on knowledge of machining processes such as hard turning, high-speed milling, and gear manufacturing. Experience with advanced 3D surface metrology and characterization techniques (e.g., WLI, FV, CLSM, stylus profilometer) for industrial components is essential. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required. Proven experience in publishing scientific research in peer-reviewed journals is necessary. Preferred qualifications include prior work in research environments with strong industrial collaboration, experience in computational modelling of material removal and surface generation processes, ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong communication and project management skills, teaching abilities, and understanding of diversity and equal opportunity issues.

How to apply

Log into KTH's recruitment system and submit your application online.
