About this position

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institutet is offering a postdoctoral position in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) physics, focusing on sequence development, image reconstruction, and data-driven image analysis for next-generation cardiovascular MRI. The successful candidate will join Assistant Professor David Marlevi’s team within a clinically integrated cardiovascular imaging network, working on innovative methods to improve cardiovascular imaging through both experimental and clinical studies.

The research centers on phase-contrast MRI and 4D Flow imaging, which are crucial for quantifying cardiovascular flow and understanding hemodynamics. The project aims to overcome current challenges such as long scan times, motion artifacts, and the trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution by developing advanced image acquisition techniques. The team has demonstrated that novel sequence development can enable high-quality image recovery at higher acceleration factors and unprecedented spatiotemporal resolutions, opening new diagnostic paradigms.

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on developing novel pulse sequences and image reconstructions for 4D flow imaging, targeting efficient volumetric flow imaging in the heart and large vessels. The methods will be evaluated using dedicated on-site MRI scanners and clinical patient cohorts, with the goal of translating imaging innovations directly into clinical practice for improved cardiovascular care.

Applicants must hold a PhD in MR physics or an equivalent foreign degree, preferably completed within the last three years. Required qualifications include documented experience in MRI physics and proficiency in programming languages such as C++ and Python. Experience in pulse sequence programming, especially in the Siemens IDEA environment (ICE, OpenRecon, FIRE), is highly advantageous. Experience in human cardiovascular MR imaging and analysis is desired but not mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate scientific expertise, independence, creativity, and strong problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international team are essential.

The position offers opportunities for grant and article co-writing, student supervision, and career mentorship, providing a strong foundation for future academic or industry leadership roles. Karolinska Institutet is a leading medical university with a creative and inspiring environment, offering a wide range of expertise and collaborative opportunities. Employment at KI includes benefits through the collective agreement as a state university.

Applications must be submitted via the Varbi recruitment system by March 16, 2026. Required documents include a PhD certificate, complete resumé, list of publications, and a summary of current work. For further information, contact Assistant Professor David Marlevi at [email protected].
