About this position

A 20-month postdoctoral research position is available at the Laboratoire Lorrain de Chimie Moléculaire (L2CM), Université de Lorraine and CNRS, in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, France. The project focuses on photocatalysis for biomass valorization, specifically the design, synthesis, and characterization of finely tuned graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and hybrid GQD-based materials as visible-light-active photocatalysts. The research aims to develop innovative strategies for sustainable chemical production by replacing fossil-based processes with biomass-derived alternatives.

The successful candidate will work on selective photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to key intermediates such as FDCA and DFF, and contribute to the development of hybrid photo-biocatalytic systems. The project involves studying structure–activity relationships and integrating these systems into modular reactors combining photo- and biocatalysis. The L2CM laboratory brings together expertise in organic, organometallic, coordination, and physical chemistry, catalysis, and chemistry for life sciences, with a focus on functional molecular and nanoscopic systems.

Candidates should have a PhD in chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with strong experience in photocatalysis and nanomaterials chemistry. Excellent English and scientific communication skills are required. The position offers a gross monthly salary of 3000-4000€, funded by CNRS and Université de Lorraine. The laboratory is directed by Prof. Andreea Pasc and is part of a vibrant research environment with about 60 members.

Interested applicants should apply via the CNRS job portal and may contact Dr. Robert Wojcieszak, Head of the InterACT Team, for further information. The position is subject to authorization by the relevant French authorities due to its scientific and technical nature.
