About this position
The National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Lisbon, Portugal, invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship (BIPD) within the DEEPVIEW project: Coastal Depth Estimation Platform and Virtual Environment. This project aims to develop a novel wave-based Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) algorithm, which will be made publicly accessible via the Google Earth Engine cloud platform, featuring a user-friendly web interface. The research is fully funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under project number 2023.16569.ICDT.
The successful postdoctoral researcher will join a multidisciplinary team at LNEC’s Estuaries and Coastal Zones Unit and collaborate with the Civil Engineering Department of the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto. The workplan includes evaluating optimal pre-processing techniques for satellite images, developing and testing advanced methods for deriving coastal bathymetry from optical and SAR imagery, and integrating these algorithms into the Google Earth Engine platform. The project leverages mathematical approaches such as Fast Fourier Transforms and Wavelet Transforms, and involves translating Python code for compatibility with the GEE API. The researcher will also assist in selecting demonstration case studies, preparing reports and research papers, and participating in outreach and training activities, including a project workshop.
The fellowship is awarded for one year, with the possibility of annual renewal up to a maximum of 30 months. The monthly allowance is €1,851.00, and the fellow is entitled to social security, insurance against personal accidents at work, and paid travel and accommodation expenses for scientific meetings or internships abroad. All work is conducted under an exclusive dedication regime as per Portuguese research fellow regulations.
Applicants must have completed a PhD within the last three years in a relevant field such as Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Naval and Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Marine Sciences, Geophysical Sciences, or Earth and Environmental Sciences. The PhD must not have been obtained at LNEC. Fluency in Portuguese or English is required, with a good command of English if Portuguese is the primary language. Application materials include a motivation letter, degree certificates (with scores and final classification), a detailed CV, one reference letter, and optional supporting documents. Foreign degrees must be officially recognized or accompanied by equivalence documentation.
The application window is open from March 16, 2026, to April 6, 2026. Applications can be submitted by email to [email protected], delivered in person, or sent by registered mail to LNEC’s address. The selection process is based on academic background, professional résumé, and an interview with the selection jury. The results will be communicated by email and published on LNEC’s recruitment page. For further information, visit LNEC’s website or the EURAXESS position page.
