About this position

Ghent University invites applications for two postdoctoral scientific researcher positions in Geography, with a focus on GIScience & Technology, as part of the STREAMS (Safe Traffic and Road Evaluation, Analysis and Monitoring System) project. The positions are based in the Department of Geography (WE12), Faculty of Sciences, and are offered on a contract of limited duration (6 months at 50% employment rate, with possible extension to 100% and/or 9 months by mutual agreement). The earliest start date is 1 May 2026.

The STREAMS project aims to significantly improve traffic safety during road works, with a particular emphasis on Vulnerable Road Users (KWGs), following the 'Less Nuisance' principles. The research group is dedicated to advancing the understanding of micro-level interactions between different road users, an area where current macro-level analyses are insufficient. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will play a key role in bridging this gap by delivering data-driven insights and developing practical applications for traffic safety.

Your core responsibilities will include performing detailed analyses of interactions between vehicles and vulnerable road users at roadworks, developing and applying advanced traffic simulation models that incorporate realistic micro-interactions, and utilizing innovative hybrid AI techniques (combining symbolic AI methods such as Point Descriptor Precedence (PDP) with data-driven infrastructures like transformers). You will also be responsible for visualizing analysis methods and results for stakeholders, including policymakers, and collaborating within a multidisciplinary consortium.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Geography & Geomatics, Computer Science, or a related field, with specialization in spatiotemporal analysis, traffic modeling, or AI/data science. Required qualifications include demonstrated experience with spatiotemporal data analysis, expertise in data-driven methods and advanced AI techniques for pattern recognition and anomaly detection, and an understanding of traffic dynamics, especially concerning vulnerable road users. Experience with micro-traffic analysis and knowledge-based AI methods (such as PDP) is advantageous. Candidates should have a strong publication record, experience in research projects, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
