About this position
Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, is seeking a Research Fellow in Protein Biochemistry to join the Australian Genome Foundry within the School of Natural Sciences. This postdoctoral position focuses on the engineering and characterization of microbial membrane transport proteins, utilizing high-throughput biofoundry technology. The successful candidate will work closely with Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen and Dr Bhumika Shah, collaborating with world-leading researchers and contributing to cutting-edge research in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology, and synthetic biology.
The role involves developing and characterizing a library of microbial transporters, conducting biochemical and biophysical analyses, and establishing advanced biofoundry workflows, including ultra-high-throughput screening for desired phenotypes. The Research Fellow will also co-supervise higher degree research students, work with biofoundry staff, and initiate academic and industry collaborations. Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers at the Diamond Light Source, University of Oxford, and the University of Leeds.
Applicants must hold a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology, synthetic biology, or a closely related discipline. Essential skills include a strong background in protein biochemistry, experience with molecular and biochemical techniques, and interdisciplinary research experience. Desirable qualifications include expertise in protein expression and purification (especially in E. coli and/or yeast), membrane transport assays, student supervision, and familiarity with biofoundry automation. Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to work independently are required.
The position offers a competitive salary ($109,272 to $123,435 p.a.) plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading, with generous employee benefits and flexible work arrangements. The appointment is full-time for two years, and international applicants are encouraged to apply. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the deadline of 18 February 2026.
