Postdoc in Stochastic Modeling of Shape Ensembles

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the stochastic modeling of shape ensembles, based at the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics within the Department of Mathematical Sciences. This department, the largest mathematical department in Sweden, is a joint venture with the University of Gothenburg and offers a vibrant, collegial environment with strong academic and societal engagement. The division’s research spans computational mathematics, optimization, biomathematics, statistics, and data science, with applications in engineering, natural sciences, medicine, and life sciences. The research project focuses on developing stochastic and statistical models for large ensembles of interacting shapes, with motivating examples such as the spatio-temporal dynamics of sweat droplets, cellular or tissue shapes, and geometric structures in vegetation. The work integrates spatial point process models (including birth-death dynamics, merging, and non-overlap constraints) with advanced shape analysis, particularly stochastic dynamics for shape change. A key aspect is the learning and calibration of these models from data using data-driven inference methods. The successful candidate will conduct independent research aligned with the project’s aims and further develop their research profile in stochastic modeling and applied mathematics. There are opportunities to supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students, as well as to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and master’s levels. The position is designed to be meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field, completed by the time of employment. Candidates should demonstrate independent research ability, strong English communication skills, and collaborative working style. Experience in stochastic modeling, applied probability, or statistical modeling is required. Additional strengths include a recent doctoral degree (within the last three years), teaching experience, and an interest in educational development. Physical presence in Sweden is required for the full two-year term, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Funding and Benefits: The position is a full-time, two-year temporary employment with full salary and Swedish employee benefits, including parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for non-native speakers. Application Process: Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files (max 40 MB each) via the online application form. Required documents include a CV (max 2 pages), a complete list of publications, details of teaching experience, and a personal letter (max 2 pages) outlining your background, research outcomes, and future goals. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Reference contact details will be requested after the interview stage. The application deadline is February 28, 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Irina Pettersson (Head of Unit), Professor Aila Särkkä ( profile ), or Dr. Moritz Schauer ( profile ). Chalmers University of Technology is located in Gothenburg, Sweden, and is internationally recognized for research and education in technology and natural sciences. The university fosters innovation and sustainability through close collaboration with society and industry.
