PhD position: Products and processes causing or postponing cell death in the yeast Komagataella phaffii (DC10)
This PhD position at the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB GmbH) offers an exciting opportunity to investigate products and processes causing or postponing cell death in the yeast
Komagataella phaffii
(syn.
Pichia pastoris
). The project is part of the European Doctoral Network UPsYDe, which aims to understand and postpone yeast cell death to improve bioproduction. You will join a consortium of 13 doctoral researchers, collaborating across academic and industrial partners, and participate in secondments at Wageningen University (Netherlands) and an industrial partner in Denmark or Spain.
At ACIB, the research focuses on
K. phaffii
, a widely used host for recombinant protein production, biopharmaceuticals, technical enzymes, and alternative food proteins. The project addresses the decline in cell viability and productivity during industrial processes, aiming to detect the impact of process conditions and products on cell death and heterogeneity. You will elucidate which modes of cell death are active under industrial production, linking product formation to cell death modes, and apply these insights to optimize process characteristics for prolonged bioproduction.
Your tasks will include cultivation of yeast in small scale and bioreactors, generation of production strains using advanced molecular biology and cloning methods, testing bioprocess conditions and products on cell death and culture heterogeneity, application of yeast cell death assays, analysis of protein quality and quantity, cell morphology analysis by microscopy and flow cytometry, mathematical modelling to design bioprocesses with reduced cell death, and communication of results to both experts and the public. Detailed experimental protocol documentation is expected.
You will be embedded within the Department of Biotechnology & Food Science in the Institute of Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology, enjoying a supportive and internationally connected research environment. ACIB offers fully flexible working hours, voluntary social benefits (such as meal vouchers and public transport tickets), and opportunities for further education and personal development. The position is funded by Horizon Europe MSCA, with an annual gross salary of EUR 40,000 plus a monthly mobility allowance of EUR 710, corresponding to a monthly net salary of EUR 2,084.04 (paid 14 times a year).
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or Diploma in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or related fields, with practical experience in bioreactor cultivation, molecular biology, mathematical modelling, and/or microbial cell engineering. Scientific interest in yeast biotechnology and modelling, excellent English skills, attention to detail, and teamwork abilities are essential. The European Doctoral Networks Mobility Rule applies: candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Austria for more than twelve months in the three years immediately before employment.
