A fully funded PhD position is available in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton, focusing on the system identification of nonlinear space structures using physics-informed machine learning. The project aims to develop new computational and experimental methods for modelling the dynamics of advanced space structures, which often exhibit nonlinear behaviours due to geometric effects, friction, and complex damping. The research combines numerical modelling, analytical techniques, and experimental validation, preparing students for careers in aerospace industries, research institutions, and academia. Applicants should have a strong background in aerospace or mechanical engineering, with skills in structural dynamics, vibration theory, and numerical or experimental mechanics.
