Postdoc in Machine Learning to Improve Decision Making

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in machine learning to improve decision making, based in the Division of Data Science and AI, Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The successful candidate will join the Healthy AI Lab, led by Associate Professor Fredrik Johansson, a group dedicated to developing machine learning methods and theory for data-driven decision-making in healthcare. The research project focuses on fundamental aspects of data-driven decision-making, inspired by and applied to healthcare challenges. Current themes include transferable and interpretable models for tabular data, efficient learning paradigms for medical imaging, and causally grounded, identifiable representation learning. The group emphasizes theoretical rigor and offers significant freedom for the postdoc to shape their research agenda within these and related areas. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign qualification, to be completed by the time of employment decision. Mandatory requirements include a strong publication record in top-tier conferences or journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, JMLR), expertise in mathematical modelling and analysis, and proficiency in software implementation for empirical validation. Teaching experience and demonstrated potential in research and education are expected. Preferred qualifications include a recent doctoral degree (within the last three years), experience in causal inference, decision-making, or reinforcement learning, and familiarity with transformer architectures. The postdoc will conduct research aligned with the lab’s themes, assist in supervising PhD and MSc students, attend relevant conferences and events, and participate actively in group meetings and seminars. Teaching duties will comprise 20% of the position, including lecturing, TAing, or student supervision. The role is designed to be meritorious for future academic, industry, or public sector positions. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the appointment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
