Doctoral Researcher in Space Physics and Cosmic Rays (Geracle Project)

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is offering a Doctoral Researcher position within the prestigious ERC Synergy-funded Geracle project. The position is based in the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit (SPA RU) at the Faculty of Science, which encompasses research groups in Ionospheric Physics, Space Climate, Cosmic Rays, and Astronomy. The SPA RU is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence and is engaged in both experimental and theoretical research at the forefront of heliospheric, magnetospheric, ionospheric physics, cosmic rays, atmospheric effects, and planetary sciences. This doctoral position is specifically within the Cosmic Rays research group, led by Professor Ilya Usoskin. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international team of about 30 researchers, contributing to the GERACLE project, which investigates the effects of geomagnetic reversals and excursions on Earth's environment. The research focus will be on advanced modelling of the Earth's magnetosphere under non-standard conditions, such as a very weak and non-dipole geomagnetic field. Collaboration with group members working on radiation environment and climate modelling is expected, and the candidate will be encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. The position offers a fixed-term contract for four years, starting on 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, with a six-month trial period. The work will be conducted in person at the Linnanmaa campus in Oulu. The starting gross salary ranges from 2500 to 2900 € per month (before taxes), determined by the Finnish university demand level chart and personal performance. Comprehensive social benefits, including pension, social welfare, and work-related health insurance, are provided. The University of Oulu also offers support for relocation, career development, and work-life balance, making Finland an attractive destination for researchers. Applicants must hold a completed M.Sc. degree or equivalent in Space Physics, Geosciences, or a directly relevant field before employment begins. Essential skills include the ability to work independently and collaboratively, scientific writing, and proficiency in English. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of electrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, geosciences, solar physics, experience in numerical modelling, and programming skills (Python, Matlab, Fortran, C). Candidates must also meet the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS). To apply, submit your application online by 31 March 2026, including a cover letter (max 2 pages), CV (max 3 pages), and a list of publications (if any). Eligible candidates will be invited to an interview, and all applicants will be notified during the selection process. For further information, contact Professor Ilya Usoskin at [email protected]. The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and is committed to equality and inclusivity. For more details and to apply, visit the official application link.

Doctoral Researcher, Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience (Cosmic Rays Group)

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience. This opportunity is based within the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit (SPA RU) at the Faculty of Science, specifically in the Cosmic Rays research group led by Professor Ilya Usoskin. The SPA RU is renowned for its research in ionospheric physics, space climate, cosmic rays, and astronomy, and is actively involved in large-scale national and European projects. The Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience focuses on understanding space conditions, particularly space weather, and advancing sustainable space usage. The successful candidate will conduct advanced modelling of the radiation environment in the atmosphere and near-Earth space, including extreme solar events. Research topics include heliospheric, magnetospheric, and ionospheric physics, cosmic rays, atmospheric effects, and planetary sciences. The position offers the chance to collaborate with a dynamic, international team of about 30 researchers, working on cutting-edge science in a highly supportive environment. Key responsibilities include performing advanced modelling of the near-Earth radiation environment, collaborating with group members in cosmic rays, magnetospheric, ionospheric, and climate modelling, publishing peer-reviewed articles, presenting at scientific conferences, and completing graduate studies culminating in a doctoral thesis. The position is fixed-term for four years, starting June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, with a six-month trial period. Work is conducted in person at the Linnanmaa campus in Oulu.
