Doctoral Scholarship in Applied Mathematics: Statistics and Causal Discovery

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of Applied Mathematics: Statistics. The Department of Mathematics, within the Faculty of Science, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join its statistics group at campus Middelheim. The research project focuses on practical challenges in causal discovery, including scalability, mixed-type data, and robustness. The successful candidate will actively prepare a PhD thesis in statistics and machine learning, publish scientific articles related to the project, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks in applied mathematics. Applicants must hold a Master degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or an equivalent field, and demonstrate excellent academic results. Strong programming skills in R and/or Python are essential. While proficiency in Dutch is a plus, it is not required. The scholarship is initially awarded for one year and can be renewed annually for up to four years, contingent on positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The planned start date is September or October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
