Doctoral Scholarship in Applied Mathematics: Statistics and Causal Discovery

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of Applied Mathematics: Statistics. As a dynamic and forward-thinking institution, the University of Antwerp offers innovative academic education to over 20,000 students and conducts pioneering scientific research. The Department of Mathematics, within the Faculty of Science, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join its statistics group at campus Middelheim. The research project focuses on practical challenges in causal discovery, including scalability, mixed-type data, and robustness. The successful candidate will actively prepare a PhD thesis in statistics and machine learning, publish scientific articles related to the project, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks in applied mathematics. The position offers a stimulating environment with access to top scientific resources and collaboration opportunities within a diverse and international academic community. Applicants must hold a Master degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or an equivalent field, and demonstrate excellent academic results. Strong programming skills in R and/or Python are essential. While proficiency in Dutch is a plus, it is not required. Candidates should align with the university’s educational vision and research policies, and exhibit qualities such as integrity, creativity, and cooperation. The scholarship is initially awarded for one year and can be renewed annually for up to four years, contingent on positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The planned start date is September or October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. To apply, candidates must submit their application via the University of Antwerp’s online platform by May 28, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, university transcripts, and contact information for references. The selection committee will review applications promptly after the deadline, and eligible candidates will be informed about subsequent steps in the selection process. For questions regarding the application form, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, reach out to Prof. Jakob Raymaekers at [email protected]. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applicants from all backgrounds. The institution has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and invests in the growth and well-being of its employees.
