Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Open Science Data Management (BIPD 019/2026)

The University of Algarve announces a competition for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD 019/2026) within the project Centro de Dados Abertos de Investigação da Universidade do Algarve (UAlg), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology under the EU Next Generation EU framework. The fellowship is designed for researchers holding a PhD in any scientific area, with a strong background in scientific data management, FAIR principles, and experience with data repositories, metadata standards, and scientific data infrastructures. The successful candidate will work at the Library of UAlg under the scientific supervision of Professor João Cascalheira, supported by a board of experienced PhD-level evaluators. The main objectives of the project include supporting the management, organization, and sharing of research data, defining appropriate metadata, ensuring compliance with FAIR principles, and implementing Data Management Plans (DMPs) in research projects at UAlg. The fellow will also ensure compliance with institutional, national, and international Open Science policies and standards, promote data quality, security, and privacy (especially regarding personal data and GDPR), and support training and skill development in data management and Open Science for the university community. Additional responsibilities include developing educational materials and best practice guides on Open Science policies, engaging in national and international networks of data managers, establishing strategic partnerships with research institutions and data infrastructures, and contributing to the definition of UAlg's Open Science policy. The fellowship is governed by the University of Algarve Research Grant Regulations and relevant national legislation. The grant offers a monthly maintenance allowance of €1,851.00, paid by bank transfer, for a duration of 12 months starting in April 2026, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year. Candidate evaluation is based on merit (80%), motivation letter (20%), and an interview for the top candidates. The application process requires submission of official identification, proof of academic qualifications, curriculum vitae, and other relevant documents. Non-Portuguese applicants must provide a valid residence permit or equivalent, or a declaration of honor, and submit Individual Taxpayer Registry information during the contract phase. Applications must be addressed to the President of the Competition Evaluation Panel and can be submitted by post or email to [email protected]. The internal application form is available online. The application window is open from March 6 to March 19, 2026. The final evaluation results will be published on the UAlg website, and the successful candidate will be notified via email and official letter. The University of Algarve reserves the right to cancel the fellowship award process if funding is not awarded. This opportunity is ideal for postdoctoral researchers interested in advancing Open Science, data management, and research data infrastructure, and contributing to the development of best practices and policies at a leading Portuguese institution.
